Why Is My HP Printer Not Printing Anything? 7 Checks I Run Before Calling Support

I review HP printers before they ship to customers—roughly 200+ units a year since 2021. When a printer fails in the field, the returned unit ends up on my bench. I disassemble it, document what went wrong, and add it to our quality log. This checklist comes from that log, not from a marketing manual.

Before the checklist: confirm what you're dealing with

This checklist covers a printer that was working and then stopped. If you've got a brand-new printer that has never printed, the issue is usually setup rather than a fault in the unit itself. That's a different path with a different fix.

Also: confirm the printer is actually on. That sounds condescending, I know. In Q1 2024, someone returned a "dead" printer that had been plugged into a power strip switched off. The strip was behind a desk and a coworker had bumped it. It happens more than you'd think.

Step 1: Inspect the paper

Most "not printing" reports trace back to paper, not electronics. Here's what I check first:

  • Is paper loaded correctly? If the tray has fewer than 5 sheets, some HP models struggle with consistent pickup. Add a fresh stack, fan the edges, and align the width guides.
  • Is it the right paper for the tray? Standard copy paper is 20 lb bond (75 gsm). Premium letterhead is often 24 lb bond (90 gsm). Heavier paper can cause multi-sheet pickup or jams if the printer isn't configured for it. Paper weight conversions are approximate; the tray label is your reference.
  • Is the paper dry? Paper is hygroscopic—it absorbs moisture from the air. Curled paper is the #1 jam cause I see in humid environments. In our 2024 quality audit, paper stored unsealed for 3+ months showed measurable curl and increased jam rates. Keep paper sealed until you need it.

Step 2: Read the error display or blink pattern

HP printers are good at telling you what's wrong—if you look. Check the screen or count the blinks on the status light. Write down any error code, like 0x61000f5 or 49.4C02, before you do anything else.

These codes map to specific subsystems. When you call support, having the code can save you twenty minutes of "have you tried turning it off and on again?" (The answer is probably yes—but write the code down first.)

Step 3: Clear the print queue

Open your computer's print queue—Settings → Printers & Scanners → your HP printer → Open Queue on Windows. Cancel all jobs. Then try printing a test page.

If the queue won't clear, the Windows spooler service might be stuck. Run net stop spooler from an admin command prompt, delete files in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, then run net start spooler. I've seen printers appear completely dead because a single corrupt spooled job was blocking everything behind it.

Step 4: Verify ink or toner (and print a diagnostic page)

The HP Smart app shows ink levels, and this is where the ink-level reading can be misleading. Ink level is not the same as ink delivery. A cartridge at 50% can still produce blank pages if the printhead is clogged.

Print a diagnostic page: HP Smart → Print Quality Tools → Print Diagnostic Page. You'll see a nozzle pattern. Gaps or stripes mean clogged nozzles—run the cleaning cycle 1–2 times and reprint. This uses a bit of ink, but far less than a replacement cartridge.

For laser printers, the equivalent is printing a configuration page from the control panel. If the output has light streaks or faded areas, the toner cartridge might be near the end of its life even if the meter says otherwise.

Step 5: Run HP Smart's diagnostic tool

HP Smart includes a built-in test that checks connectivity, driver status, and hardware communication. It's decent. In my experience, it correctly identifies roughly 7 out of 10 common problems.

Actually, let me rephrase. It doesn't always identify the root cause, but it reliably tells you whether the printer is reachable and communicating. That's valuable diagnostic information when you're talking to support. Run it once, note the result.

Step 6: Blank pages—what's actually happening

"Why is my printer printing blank pages" is a popular search for good reason. The printer takes the paper, the rollers turn, the pages come out—but they're empty. Three causes, in order of frequency:

  1. Clogged printhead (inkjet). Nozzles blocked, no ink reaching the paper. Run the cleaning cycle 2–3 times. If no improvement, replace the cartridge. On HP inkjets, the printhead is part of the cartridge, so a genuine replacement resolves it.
  2. Fuser failure (laser). Toner is being applied but not fused to the page. Touch the output: if the image smudges when you rub it, the fuser is suspect. This usually requires a technician.
  3. The "print blank page" driver setting. Yes, that setting exists—it's used for multi-part carbonless forms. If it got enabled by accident, you get blank pages. Check Printer Preferences → Advanced, and look for "Insert Blank Page" or similar. I've rejected pre-ship units over this exact setting. The fix took thirty seconds.

One clarification: a truly blank page is different from faint output. Even with a partially clogged printhead, you'll usually see some ghost of content—the printer lays down ink at 600 DPI internally, and blocked nozzles create gaps and banding, not a clean white sheet.

Step 7: Check the paper type setting (the one almost everyone misses)

Here's the problem I see most often on returned units: the printer is set for photo paper, transparency, or cardstock, but the tray contains plain copier paper.

When this mismatch exists, lasers use the wrong fuser temperature and inkjets apply the wrong ink load. The result can be smearing, excessive curling, heavy ink usage, or pages that look blank because the ink isn't bonding with the sheet properly. The printer's auto-detect can sometimes catch the mismatch—but not always. In one quarter of our pre-ship test loop, 30+ units printed visibly poor output because a test station had been set to thick paper while the tray held 20 lb bond. Everyone checked the printer hardware first. No one checked the setting.

Open the printing preferences, find Paper/Media Type, and match it to the paper in the tray. Ten seconds. In many cases, this is the entire difference between a "broken" printer and a correct configuration.

When to call HP for repair

If you've gone through all seven steps and the printer still produces nothing, you're likely looking at hardware failure. From my bench, the most common genuine faults in 2024:

  • Printhead failure after months of idle storage
  • Paper pickup roller wear on high-volume units (50,000+ pages)
  • Firmware corruption after an interrupted update

If the unit is under warranty, use HP official support before visiting a third-party shop. I'm not saying third-party repair is always bad—some shops do good work. But opening the unit can complicate a warranty claim. I've seen a claim denied after a local shop replaced a part that wasn't the actual issue.

What I don't pretend to know

My best guess is the complexity of the failure mode, but honestly? I don't have data on it.
